So what exactly is Microfiber?
At first glance, the Microfiber cloth appears to be no different from the traditional cotton cloths or mops. They both share similar thickness; however upon closer examination it becomes obvious that the Microfiber has significant advantages over traditional cotton cloths, in terms of quality and effectiveness.
The major difference between Microfiber and traditional cotton cloths & mops, are that Microfiber strands are so small, one hundred times finer than one single strand of human hair, that the naked human eye can barely see them.
Microfiber is a synthetic fiber made up of a blend of polyester and polyamide. These materials are bundled together to form a strand, that when examined under a microscope appears in the shape of a star. Those bundles are then split into ultra-fine single fibres using a specific combination of heat and agitation. The fibers are then finally woven together, to make the finished Microfiber products.
Research shows that it is the amount of splits that determines the quality of the microfiber. The splitting process breaks down each fiber into a very thin strand, when woven together these strands create a surface area covered with millions of spaces between the fibers to trap moisture, dirt and debris.

The strands hooked ends will also reach into cracks and crevices on the surface area being cleaned, picking up and removing dirt, and absorbing the residue inside the microfiber cloths. Traditional cleaning cloths, such as, Kentucky cotton mop heads or cotton cloths, do not reach into these crevices on the surfaces being cleaned, but will instead simply push the dirt around the surface.
Research has shown that static charge helps in the effectiveness of Microfiber cleaning. The millions of fiber's rubbing together produce a static charge that attracts the dirt, pulling it in and trapping the residue until such time as the Microfiber cloths are washed or rinsed, which causes the static charge to be neutralised and then the dirt is released.
Microfiber and Company Green Programmes
Microfiber is fast becoming an essential component of green programmes. Numerous facilities around the world now advocate for Microfiber in their green cleaning guidelines, and most manufacturers of green cleaning solutions recommend the use of microfiber for product applications. There is also a positive environmental impact, as Microfiber is one of the greenest, non-chemical tools on the market today for the cleaning industry.
JSK passionately believes that to be truly environmentally friendly, a green cleaning programme must implement products and procedures that reduce harm to the environment, both inside & outside the facility.
When implementing a green cleaning strategy, you have to look beyond the cleaning solution itself, and consider the broader factors, including the cleaning tools and the method of cleaning. You therefore have to look comprehensively, at all the ways to improve the health of the buildings which you are cleaning. JSK Microfiber cleaning technology is therefore an obvious choice for any green cleaning programme. It contains considerable Pro-Earth and Pro-Health benefits, including waste reduction.
Microfibers - Waste Reduction & Recycling benefits
Waste reduction is one of the pillars of the green movement and is microfiber's strongest selling point. Unlike paper towels or traditional cotton cloths & mops Microfiber is Reusable and can be laundered hundreds of times, its longer lifespan means fewer items end up in a landfill site.
To demonstrate an example of waste reduction & cost savings; Just two (2) of JSK's 'Waffle' Microfiber cleaning cloths can replace three hundred (300) cases of 6 x 150 meter bull center pull rolls, saving an incredible 270,000 meters of paper going into waste.
Microfiber also greatly reduces water usage, which helps to protect the environment and also saves on the bottom line. Microfiber is far more absorbent than traditional materials and this allows the product to retain more water and clean more effectively. In fact, Microfiber floor cloths used for damp mopping interior floors, corridors, canteens, patient rooms and other areas can reduce water consumption by as much as 50%, compared to traditional cotton mops, while simultaneously saving on the amount of cleaning solution used.
Microfiber -Improving Indoor Air Quality
Eliminating or reducing chemical usage can help improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by lessening the amount of harmful Volatile Organic compounds (VOC) a worker or householder may inhale. Microfiber also captures more soil and doesn't leave behind lint or dust like cotton and paper materials, thus improving Indoor Air Quality.
JSK - setting the standards for the future in green cleaning
We believe that if certification bodies had a standard for a non-chemical product, it is certain that Microfiber would achieve one. However, even without certification, Microfiber is an important component of green cleaning, for example, using Microfiber cloths and mops can earn credits for leadership in Energy and environmental design.
