What are Colloids?

Until recently, the average person has not heard of the term "Colloids" and what they have to do with cleaning. Colloid is a term used in chemistry, which is given to a state of matter. Put in simple terms, it is a name that is given to very tiny particles that are suspended or "float" in another medium. These particles are electrically charged and repel each other in a ceaseless random movement.

A practical example of a colloid is fog. If you look closely at fog or steam in a sauna (same thing) you can see the extremely tiny droplets of water floating around in the air. They just move around aimlessly, but never stopping.

How do they clean?

What has this got to do with cleaning? Well with a colloidal based cleaner there really small (sub-microscopic) particles, technically known as "micelles" as an example, a micelle is one billionth of a meter in size, or you can fit three million micelles on the tip of a safety pin.

These micelles move around in a water mixture and collide with the soil of grease on the surface being cleaned. When the micelles crash into the soil or grease particles, they chip off tiny pieces acting like little jackhammers which then attaches to the colloid and becomes suspended in the water. This process occurs both rapidly and constantly and in a short space of time, usually after 1-2 minutes depending in the severity of soil or grease on the surface being cleaned. Then all the dirt can be removed from the surface, using microfiber cloths or mops. Just as importantly, the micelles stop the pieces of dirt and grease suspended in the water from rejoining so they cannot redeposit back on to the surface that has just been cleaned.

This technology is totally different to the way traditional soap and detergent clean. They tend to stick to the soils and grease like iron fillings sticking to a magnet, then float around in the water carrying the globule with them.
